The Earth is host to more than 400,000 documented species of plants. Our planet depends upon these plants to nuture and sustain all living things.
Botany Surveys Plant surveys are conducted to determine any probability of sensitive or watch plant species in a particular site.
Surveys are conducted when sensitive species are most identifiable.
The survey season begins May 15 and weather permitting, extends through September 15.
Waivers The Forest Service determines the following or other proposed waivers for survey requirements.
Any project area that has completed a survey within the last 3-5 years.
Any project area in which the habitat displays low potential for the occurrence of sensitive plant species.
Any project that is affecting a small area of the national grassland with low potential for disturbance.
Any project within a previous area of disturbance that is now dominated by non-native grasses.
Despite any waivers for a plant survey, a biological evaluation (BE) must be completed.
Biological Evaluations (BE)
Biological evaluations are conducted to determine the presence of sensitive plant species and botanical resources and determine the potential of these resources being impacted by the proposed project.
If it is determined that a sensitive plant survey is not required, any necessary site visit and preparation of the BE may be conducted outside of the May 15 - September 15 sensitive plant survey period.
Noxious Weed Surveys
As a condition of special use permits on US Forest Service regulated land, land tracts must be surveyed for the presence of noxious weeds. If present, invasive species must be treated consistant with USFS policies, using herbicides subject to approval of the Forest Service and the necessary Federal reports completed and filed.
Our staff has worked with USFS staff previously and are familiar with their most recent requirements.
Our staff is educated and experienced in the areas of engineering, biology, natural resource management and environmental science. We would welcome the opportunity to share our knowledge and best practices experience as a biology consultant for you.
